Once the general layout is set, the real polishing begins. A skilled typesetter knows exactly where to let the text breathe or where to tighten the tracking. They ensure the quotes are smart, eliminate distracting gaps, and follow The Chicago Manual of Style to a T when handling numbers, symbols, and abbreviations. These subtle refinements, which quietly boost legibility and overall aesthetics, are the essence of microtypography.
A cornerstone of the discipline is Hanging Punctuation. By pushing punctuation marks slightly outside the margin, you create a perfectly flush edge. A pro will also hunt down “rivers”—those accidental vertical gaps that break the flow of a column. Ultimately, the goal is to achieve a consistent “gray value” across the text block, free of unsightly blotches. This is why distinguishing between a hyphen, an en-dash, and an em-dash is a matter of both visual weight and semantic precision.
Hermann Zapf was one of the first to obsess over these nuances. In the 70s and 80s, he developed the hz-program, whose algorithms for uniform composition eventually became the backbone of Adobe InDesign. With the advent of OpenType, features like ligatures, old-style figures, and kerning pairs have become automated. Small caps and old-style figures allow abbreviations and numbers to blend into the line without causing visual noise, transforming standard typesetting into a seamless visual tapestry.
